Police say a man stole Colts wide receiver Reggie Wayne’s car before taking it out for a drunken spin.Wayne tried pick up his Bentley Sunday morning after leaving it at the Westin Hotel on the previous night.

The valet staff had a problem: no one had Wayne’s keys or knew where his car actually was. The white, 2007 Bentley was nowhere in sight.

Officers talked to a parking garage security guard who remembered seeing a man dressed as a valet leave the garage with the vehicle at about 9:45 p.m. The hotel valet supervisor realized that only one person matched that description, the report said.

That supervisor identified the man as Gunner Belcher, 21, Indianapolis. Attempts to contact him failed repeatedly, police said. The supervisor said Belcher had left work around 9 p.m. but failed to clock out.

IMPD later realized that Belcher had been arrested around 2 a.m. Sunday while driving a white Bentley. Police pulled him over in the 300 block of South Meridian Street—and said Belcher had been drinking.

A separate police report said Belcher identified himself as Wayne’s “cousin by marriage.”

The officer who pulled Belcher over said he was obstructing traffic and didn’t move after the officer “flashed a light at him several times.” The officer approached Belcher, who was stopped in the street and wasn’t wearing a seat belt. The officer said he was talking on his phone and didn’t have his registration.

The officer said Belcher had “glassy eyes and slurred speech.” He also had the “heavy odor of (an) alcoholic beverage,” the report said, and failed a field sobriety test. He was booked on charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, failure to wear a seat belt and failure to carry registration. His blood alochol level tested at 0.13, the report said.

Police had the car towed. After verifying that the stolen car was indeed Wayne’s, police returned it to the Colts receiver.
