Legendary soul singer and mother Teena Marie has passed away. It has been rumored that she has passed away in her sleep and also that she died of a series of seizures! What is definite is that her publicist has indeed confirmed her passing and it is a very sad day and holiday season for the loved ones she has left behind.

Teena Marie was signed to Motown Records at the age of 19. She was nicknamed the “Ivory Queen of Soul”. Her mentor the Late Rick James helped her career with “Fire & Desire” and “Square Biz” but she also had very big hits as a leading lady with “Behind the Groove” and “Ooh La La La.”

Teena was on the verge of a very successful comeback and reintroducing herself to the world and its younger audience. She was briefly signed to Cash Money Records which is predominantly a hip-hop label ran by Brian “Birdman” Williams. Although quiet and short lived Teena did put out a Gold album on the label titled “La Doña”. The album featured the Al Green sampled “Still in Love” and “A Rose By Any Other Name” with the late Gerald Levert.

Here is the very last televised performance of Rick and Teena doing their classic “Fire and Desire”

Teena will surely be missed but her legacy will live on forever in the minds and hearts of all her friends, fans and family! R.I.P Teena, you are already dearly missed!
