Have you or someone ever joked about having aches and pains? Even if the comments were cute and humorous, about 37 million people in the U.S. are living with arthritis.

Did you know that there are over 100 different types of arthritis?  Simply defined by yahoo! health, arthritis is the inflammation of one or more joints, which results in pain, swelling, stiffness and limited movement.

Cartilage is an important component in our bodies because it acts as a padding with shock and pressure in our joints when we move around.   The breakdown or loss of cartilage prevents our joints smooth movement.  The lack of cartilage invites problems like bones rubbing together, swelling, pain and stiffness.

Osteoarthritis is the most common type and is more likely to occur as you age. You may feel it in any of your joints, but most commonly in your hips, knees or fingers. Risk factors for osteoarthritis include:

  • Being overweight
  • Previously injuring the affected joint
  • Using the affected joint in a repetitive action that puts stress on the joint (baseball players, ballet dancers, and construction workers are all at risk)

Treatment for arthritis varies and depends on the individual but, exercise and rest are great way to help this condition.
