It’s the first week of 2011 and Butler students are halfway through Winter Break. That means we’ve had ample time to see the family we’ve missed while in school, friends from home and to make memories that will last us all this year. We’ve made plans and gone to parties, trimmed trees and opened presents, hung out until the early hours of morning and done it all over again. I’m sure this seems like a break from the everyday complaints of college students, of too much work and not enough time or an overload of studying. That’s true. But only for the first two weeks. We get to see the family we haven’t seen in months, but with drawbacks. Your parents expect you to do household tasks you thought ended when you graduated from high school, your little brother wakes up a whole lot earlier (and noisier) than you remembered and you start to wonder if everyone else’s parents are giving them that “you’ve been laying around my house for way too long” look.

Being back on campus suddenly seems like a fantastic idea.

So now we’re buying books and packing suitcases to go back to Butler. Since we’ve been filled with homecooked meals, gotten to see the family that we usually remember to call every once in a while and the friends we text, Skype and Facebook chat in person, it’s time to hit the books once again. Maybe some of us are more focused to do better in school than we did last semester and have new years resolutions and the grades to prove it. It’s the season for setting goals and making plans to better yourself, whether’s academically or otherwise. Maybe someone wants to find a better balance between schoolwork and fun. However it happens, I’m sure all of us are determined to make bigger and better memories for 2011 than in years past.
