INDIANAPOLIS — A large winter storm is expected to belt parts of Indiana with heavy snow and freezing rain early in the week.A winter storm watch is in effect for much of central and northern Indiana from Tuesday morning through Wednesday evening.

 Check: Watches, Warnings

The watch area generally runs from south of Terre Haute to just south of the Muncie area. It includes the Bloomington and Franklin areas, but didn’t include the Columbus and Greensburg areas as of Sunday morning.

A storm system is expected to move to the south of the region, pulling a lot of moisture up from the south as temperatures at the surface remain below freezing in much of the area.

This setup could cause a prolonged period of freezing rain in the Indianapolis area and in other parts of the region under the watch.

South of Indianapolis, temperatures could warm above freezing, and the precipitation could fall as plain rain. North and northwest of Indianapolis, the precipitation could fall as snow, and the snow could be quite heavy.

The National Weather Service said accumulations in the area that receives all snow could exceed 10 inches. The Lafayette and Kokomo areas could be in line to see more snow than freezing rain.

For areas that receive primarily freezing rain, ice accumulation could be significant. Up to an inch of freezing rain could fall in the Indianapolis area before the precipitation changes to snow as the storm system moves away on Wednesday.

There is a potential for widespread downed trees and power lines in areas that receive primarily freezing rain because winds could gust up to 35 mph on Wednesday.

A lot could change in the next day or two as the storm system forms and begins moving toward Indiana. Changes in the track of the storm system could significantly alter the forecast. The watch area generally runs from south of Terre Haute to just south of the Muncie area.
