Kendrick Williams, 17, was talking a shortcut home from work in St. Petersburg, Fla., on April 4 when he crossed paths with one of the Sunshine State’s most notorious residents.

“I heard the hiss, and then I looked down and I seen the alligator on the ground,” Williams told ABC Action News. “I ran. I didn’t look back.”

The gator — which Williams believes was 6 or 7 feet long — apparently tried to take a bite out of the teen as he passed a pond near an apartment complex.

The reptile missed Williams’ leg, but managed to chomp on his baggy pants near the thigh.

Williams made it home unscathed, though the trousers might need a trip to tailor. The gator’s sharp teeth left several large rips in the fabric.

“That was the advantage of wearing baggy pants that day,” said Williams’ mother, Tanita Murray.
