GREENSBURG, Ind. — A man who police previously said was shot by officers during a chase in Decatur County Tuesday actually shot himself, Indiana State Police said Friday.

Dustin Wise, 27, of Fortville, died Thursday night. Preliminary results from an autopsy performed Friday in Marion County indicated Wise died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, said ISP Sgt. Noel Houze.

Police chased Wise, who was suspected in three armed robberies, along Interstate 74 before he exited onto State Road 3.

Officers fired on Wise after they heard gunfire inside the vehicle because they thought he was shooting at them, Houze said.

Investigators later determined that a total of four shots were fired during the incident — one by Wise and three by a trooper and Greensburg police officer.

Police said Wise had robbed two liquor stores and a gas station prior to the chase. Officers fired on Wise after they heard gunfire inside the vehicle because they thought he was shooting at them, Houze said.
