Jim Sorgi’s stint as an unemployed quarterback didn’t last long.

The longtime Indianapolis Colts backup, whose contract was terminated last week, agreed to a one-year contract with the New York Giants.

Sorgi, who worked behind Peyton Manning for six seasons with the Colts, will back up younger brother Eli Manning with the Giants.

“Jim is very excited to go to New York and help the Giants,” Matt Brei, Sorgi’s agent, said in an e-mail to The Star. “He had a great visit (Monday) with the team and is looking forward to the new opportunity.”

Sorgi had been Peyton Manning’s backup since the Colts selected him in the sixth round of the 2004 draft.

In six seasons, Sorgi appeared in 16 games. He completed 99-of-156 passes for 929 yards with six touchdowns and one interception.

Sorgi, 29, appeared in one game last season and finished the year on injured reserve with an injury to his right shoulder.

Colts acquire defensive end

The Colts added to their depth on the defensive line by claiming end J.D. Skolnitsky off waivers Tuesday. The 6-5, 255-pounder spent 2009 on the Washington Washington Football Team practice squad after signing as an undrafted free agent from James Madison.
