Antonio Santiago, 13-months-old, is shot while being strolled by his mother, Sherry West, on a quiet, tree-lined street in Brunswick, Georgia. The distraught mother claims that two young Black men tried to rob her and when she said that she didn’t have any money, one of them shot her in the leg and ear then coldly walked over to the stroller and fatally shot her baby boy in the face.

911 callers could be heard screaming as they tell the dispatcher that the baby had been shot and his mother had him on the ground trying to perform CPR. One man told the dispatcher that baby Antonio was not breathing and that he had been shot “right between the eyes.”

After receiving an anonymous tip, Brunswick police searched for hours before tracking down Dominique Lang, 15 (pictured below right), who allegedly admitted to being involved in the attempted robbery. The cooperative teen then allegedly led authorities to the alleged shooter, De’Marquis Elkins, 17 (pictured below left), as he was walking to his sister Sabrina Elkins’ home for breakfast.

“The police came pointing a Taser at him, telling him to get on the ground,” Elkins recalled by phone. “He said, `What are you getting me for? Can you tell me what I did?’”

West claims Elkins knew exactly what he was doing:

“He asked me for money and I said I didn’t have it,” she told The Associated Press on Friday from her apartment, which was scattered with her son’s toys and movies.

“When you have a baby, you spend all your money on babies. They’re expensive. And he kept asking and I just said `I don’t have it.’ And he said, `Do you want me to kill your baby?’ And I said, `No, don’t kill my baby!’”

West identifies Elkins from a line-up of 24 mugshots, exclaiming:

“He killed my baby, and he shot me, too,” she said. “My baby will never be back again,” West said, sobbing. “He took an innocent life. I want his life, too.”

Two teddy bears, a vase of flowers and a cross were placed against a wooden fence at the site of the crime.

Baby Antonio’s father, Luis Santiago, who lives across the street from West and regrets not being there to save his son, said that he has prayed and forgiven the two, but that they must pay the consequences.

Lang’s aunt, Debra Obley, admits that she is who called the police on her nephew and Elkins.

News4Jax reports:

“I feel sad I’m being threatened, yeah I’m being threatened by people saying they are going to kill me or have people to kill me, because I’m a snitch,” said Obley.

Obley’s nephew is the 14-year-old accused of being an accomplice to the murder.

She tells Channel 4 that she gave Elkins a ride from her mother’s house, not knowing who he was.

“When he got in the car, he laid down in the backseat,” said Obley. “He kept looking around, peeping up and I said, ‘Boy, what you doing? You skipping school?’ You know, he said ‘No ma’am.’”

When she started asking for more questions, Obley said Elkins cut the ride short.

“When he got out of the car, he had something hid up in his pants. It was a gun,” said Obley.

Obley says she felt something wasn’t right, so she asked her nephew about it.

“I said…if you’ve got something to do with this little baby, you can’t talk to me. I’m your auntie,” said Obley. “He said ‘Auntie, I don’t even know the boy. I don’t have anything to do with that.’”

Even though he wouldn’t talk to her, Obley decided to talk to police. While it’s hard to see her nephew behind bars, Obley said she feels she did the right thing.

“It’s wrong. That was a baby. That baby can’t come back,” said Obley. “That mama will never get that baby back. Whoever did it deserves to be behind bars.”

Katrina Elkins, 33, the teen’s aunt (pictured below left), and his mother, Karimah Elkins, 36 (pictured below right), lead investigators to a small pond where they found a .22 caliber revolver, Glynn County police Chief Matt Doering told the Associated Press. De’Marquise’s aunt had previously stated that her nephew was at home eating breakfast during the time of the shooting and could not have killed the baby.

The two women were arrested for lying to authorities and evidence tampering and both posted $1,104 bail on the charges. Katrina, however, was held on a probation violation charge for Henry County. She was charged with two misdemeanors — speeding and driving with a suspended license.

West’s daughter Ashley Glassey, 21, believes that her mother may have killed the baby for the insurance money. Glassey claims that her mother’s story changed; first she claimed that she was shot first, then she claimed that the baby was shot first. Glassey also stated that West’s moods shifted between sobbing and being “fine.” Even more suspiciously, according to Glassey, her mother immediately began asking how soon she could receive a life insurance policy check in the mail.

Elkins and Lang are indicted and charged with 11 and 7 counts of murder respectively. They escape the death penalty only because they are minors, according to District Attorney Jackie Johnson.

Elkins is also being charged with another failed robbery attempt. On March 11th, he allegedly pointed his gun at Wilfredo Calix-Flores, demanding his cell phone and wallet before shooting Flores in the arm.
