There was no Saturday night football for the students of Virginia State University and Winston-Salem University. Things got physical between the players before the teams could take the field which resulted in the game being canceled all together. The game was canceled because five Virginia State University players assaulted the quarterback of Winston-Salem’s football team during a bathroom fight at a luncheon a day before the game.
Although five Virginia State players were reportedly involved in  the incident, only one has been arrested and charged. Virginia State’s running back Lamont Britt was arrested on Friday and charged with misdemeanor assault inflicting serious injury. The other players have yet to be identified. However, at the hands of the five Virginia State players, Winston-Salem’s quarterback Rudy Johnson suffered from a cut above his right eye and his right eye was swollen.

Because of the incident, both schools say the CIAA canceled the game that was supposed to take place this past Saturday. In a released statement, the chancellor of Winston-Salem University Donald Reaves said, “Today’s event was supposed to be a celebration for both teams and for all the players who were being recognized for an outstanding season. The actions from the Virginia State players certainly changed the outcome for everyone.”
While the coach of Virginia State’s football team  Latrell Scott did apologize for the violent occurrence, he questioned whether five of his players were actually involved. “One of our players made a mistake and cost our team the opportunity to play in the CIAA championship game today. This isolated incident does not represent us as a team or university and we extend our deepest regrets to the WSSU player involved. Due to the ongoing investigation, I cannot comment on the details of the events that took place but can clarify that only one of our players, not five as previously reported, was involved.”
It has been reported that Winston-Salem’s Rudy Johnson was treated and released from a local hospital. Police are continuing to investigate the case.
