Indianapolis – The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles is dropping its practice of issuing duplicate license plate numbers for different types of vehicles.

Agency spokesman Dennis Rosebrough says the BMV will make the switch to the nonduplicate numbers by the end of this year. Eyewitness News partners at The Indianapolis Star reports that previously the same numbers could appear on plates issued for a car, a pickup truck and a motorcycle.

Police officers in Indiana have known to record the type of plate along with the number when issuing a ticket, but Rosebrough says the duplicate numbers have caused problems with other states.

Rosebrough says the BMV also is eliminating the two small letters from specialty plates. State police asked that the specialty plates be made easier to read by using only full-sized letters.
