Sen. Donnelly listens to folks talk about violence at Forest Manor Center
AFTERNOONS WITH AMOS – YOUR LIFE MATTERS WEEK. US Senator Joe Donnelly kicked off Afternoons with Amos YOUR LIFE MATTERS WEEK a series of broadcasts, focusing from a variety of perspectives, on the issue of the increased violence in Indianapolis and how and what can the community do to reduce and stop it and deal with the issues that create it. Later, the Senator appeared at two community meetings at Christamore House and Forest Manor Multi-Service Center to hear from Indianapolis residents about the problems of crime and violence and what should be done about them. Meetings that were very emotional and focused. Interviewed on Afternoons with Amos, Senator Donnelly talked about the desire of people to live in a safe neighborhood and that he wanted to come and hear directly from people about the problems and what could he do. Sen. Donnelly acknowledged that Federal dollars for programs like summer jobs for youth and young adults are not as plentiful as they used to be. He also talked about how more complicated it has become for small groups and faith based groups to apply for Federal crime fighting grants. But the Senator pledged his help and the help of his “team” in helping Indianapolis residents and Hoosiers. Also in the interview, Amos asked the Senator about the crisis at the Veterans Administration. While Senator Donnelly said he had the greatest respect for Veterans Affairs Secretary Gen. Eric Shinseki, the Senator is awaiting the report from the President Barack Obama’s Deputy Chief of Staff on problems at VA Hospitals, particularly in Arizona. Senator Donnelly did say that he’d spoken with the heads of Indiana’s two major VA Hospitals and they assured him that the problems talked about nationally don’t seem to have appeared in Indiana.
