Morgan committed the appalling act in November 2011 because he was reportedly angry his daughter’s mother was ending their relationship, prosecutors claim. Two-year-old Tierra passed away shortly after the incident.

While in court, Morgan begged for forgiveness from Imani Benton, the child’s mother, but it wasn’t for killing their daughter.

“I want to say I’m sorry for the deterioration of what I thought was a beautiful friendship between the two of us that blossomed into a daughter,” Morgan told Benton.

But Benton wasn’t moved, “I don’t understand why she was taken from me,” she said. “It does give me peace to know that she is in Heaven with God, and [Morgan] will pay for what he did to her, to me, and to everyone else. No good will come to him.”

Morgan attempted to paint himself as a great Father during the trial, saying his primary goal in life was protecting Imani and Tierra.

Judge Anthony Mellaci Jr. strongly rebuked this claim while sentencing Morgan, saying that it is unfortunate New Jersey abolished its death penalty.

“This child was alive when she was placed in the water in pitch darkness, and had to suffer the unthinkable action of having water rush in and fill her lungs while strapped into that car seat,” Mellaci said.

“This child suffered before she died.”
