(L-R) Sheriff John Layton and Judge William Nelson at Announcement of Prescription Drug Drop-Off Program

A personal tragedy involving an overdose of prescription drugs that impacted an Indianapolis family has led to something positive that can help prevent similar tragedies.  Marion County Sheriff John Layton has teamed up with Drug Free Marion County to provide a safe, no questions asked way for Indianapolis/Marion County residents to safely dispose of their unneeded prescription medicines and drugs.  Marin County Superior Court Judge William Nelson was the driving force behind this unique solution to a growing problem.  Appearing on Afternoons with Amos, Judge Nelson told the community that he and his wife Kristie had lost their then 20 year old son to an overdose of prescription medicine.  Not overdosing on medicine he was supposed to take, but Judge Nelson’s son died because he was taking those prescription drugs to get high, to abuse them; not use them properly.  Judge Nelson stunned the Afternoons with Amos audience by saying that prescription drug abuse is a growing problem among young people today who take the legal drugs trying to get a high and believing because the drugs themselves are legal, taking them is legal. The new program involves a special Drop Box in the lobby of the Marion County Sheriff’s Headquarters at 40 S. Alabama.  Anyone at anytime can take their unneeded and unused prescription drugs and drop them into the Drop Box for safe disposal.  Also, in the interview Judge Nelson talked about the personal tragedy that impacted his family. The Judge agrees that YOUR LIFE MATTERS, that everyone’s life is precious and hopes that this effort will save other families from going through the tragedy he and his wife went through.
