Vonderrit Myers

Recently released surveillance footage from Shaw Market in St. Louis shows 18-year-old Vonderrit Myers (pictured above with his mother) buying a sandwich minutes before being shot by a St. Louis police officer.

As previously reported by NewsOne, St. Louis Police Chief Sam Dotson claims that a 32-year-old police officer (who has not been named) attempted to stop Myers for a “pedestrian check” and thought he saw Myers with a gun. Upon pursuit, the officer alleged that Myers turned around and fired a weapon, forcing the officer to return fire with 17 shots.

Myers family has insisted from the very beginning that he did not have a weapon and had just purchased a sandwich when he was killed by police—and that a weapon on the scene could have been planted.

“Police lie. They lied about Michael Brown, too,” said Myers’ mother, Syreeta Myers.

Authorities, who still claim that Myers had a 9mm gun, continue to tell a different story.

Ballistic evidence allegedly shows that Myers fired three shots before the gun, which was reported stolen on September 26, jammed.

Preliminary autopsy results show a shot to the head killed Myers, according to medical examiner Dr. Michael Graham. Contributing factors were 6 or 7 shots to the lower extremities. The fatal shot entered Myers’ cheek, according to the St. Louis Dispatch.

“He’s fortunate the guy missed him,” said Brian Millikan, attorney for the police officer who killed Myers, adding that the idea that Myers was carrying a sandwich is “ridiculous.”

“We welcome any fact finder…Who is looking at it through a factual lens, not a political lens,” he said.

“This policeman did everything by the book with the possible exception of waiting too long,” he said. “We’re just fortunate it didn’t cost him his life.”

The name of the 32-year-old police officer who killed Myers has not been released and he remains on paid administrative leave pending an investigation.
