Marvel Studios reached an agreement with Netflix earlier this year to produce 13-episode series for four individual superheroes — Daredevil, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and Jessica Jones.  After years of previous speculation and fans asking for his presence, Marvel has finally announced that Mike Colter will star as the Harlem bruiser in the Netflix venture.

Colter, known for his roles as Big Willie Little in Million Dollar Baby and  James Locke in the Halo: Nightfall mini-series, will take on the role of Cage, according to a press release from Marvel Studios released this past Monday. Marvel’s Head of Television/executive producer Jeph Loeb expressed how ready the company is to bring Cage in:

Fans have longed to see Luke Cage and in Mike we’ve found the perfect actor…Viewers will get to meet Luke Cage in ‘Marvel’s A.K.A. Jessica Jones,’ and experience why he is such an important super hero in the Marvel mythos.

Wrongly imprisoned for a crime he didn’t commit, Luke Cage was given superhuman strength and bulletproof skin by accident and used it to become the Hero for Hire: a contract superhero, basically. Cage started as a blaxploitation fixture in Marvel Comics but quickly rose to mainstream prominence in limited series like Jessica Jones. He now leads his own group, The Mighty Avengers. No word yet on how he’ll be portrayed in the series yet, but we doubt it will stray far from this basic formula.

Colter will be making his debut as Cage during A.K.A. Jessica Jones, presumably making the jump to his own series afterward. All of the Marvel/Netflix series will premiere in 2015. In other Marvel news,  Daredevil recently wrapped production, and A.K.A. Jessica Jones is just starting after Krysten Ritter was cast as the titular character.
