Oprah Winfrey felt the wrath of Black Twitter first hand when she spoke out about the recent protests surrounding the police brutality against African-Americans. In an interview with People, Oprah applauded the #BlackLivesMatters movement but criticized it for what she claims, not having leadership. Oprah remarked:

I think it’s wonderful to march and to protest and it’s wonderful to see all across the country, people doing it. But what I’m looking for is some kind of leadership to come out of this to say, ‘This is what we want. This is what we want. This is what has to change, and these are the steps that we need to take to make these changes, and this is what we’re willing to do to get it.

Oprah along with David Oyelowo spoke with the magazine to promote their film, Selma where the media titan serves as a producer. The movie focuses on the 1965 Alabama protests for Black voting rights. O’s comments drew outrage from protesters on Twitter who’ve been active into the movement, charging her with being out of touch and challenged her to do something.

So far, Oprah hasn’t responded to the remarks.  She did however, think protestors can learn how to be more organized by watching how things were done in the past. Oprah stated:

I think that what can be gleaned from our film, ‘Selma,’ is to really take note of the strategic intention required when you want real change.
