Mother charged with murder after 2-year-old boy dies in Detroit; prosecutors cite choking

A Detroit woman has been charged with murder in connection with the death of her 2-year-old son.

The Wayne County prosecutor’s office said 26-year-old Priyanka Chakraborty is believed to have choked her son to death. Chakraborty was charged Monday with first-degree murder, felony murder and first-degree child abuse. She faces life in prison without parole if convicted.

The boy, Omraj Chakraborty, was found unresponsive Friday morning at an east-side home on Sobieski Street. He was taken to a hospital, but could not be revived.

The prosecutor’s office said the cause of death was listed as asphyxia.

Man charged with murder in Highland Park reserve officer’s death

A 35-year-old man has been charged with murder for allegedly gunning down an off-duty police reserve officer outside a Detroit bar.

Roderick Jones was working security Friday night at the Opyum Lounge when he was shot multiple times in the parking lot. Police said Jones told the alleged gunman, Walter Treon Jennings, to leave the lounge before the shooting.

Five people were taken into custody in connection with the shooting, but Jennings is the only one charged.

He is facing first-degree murder, felon in possession and second-degree felony firearm charges. He is scheduled to be arraigned Monday.

Jones, 33, was a reserve officer with the Highland Park Police Department and also a U.S. Army veteran who served in Iraq. He leaves behind two sons and two stepsons.

Highland Park officer shot in leg in raid expected to recover

A Highland Park police officer was shot in the leg during a raid Monday night.

The officer is in stable condition and is expected to make a full recovery. Mayor DeAndre Windom said the officer may go home as early as Tuesday.

The shooting occurred in the 200 block of Candler near McNichols and Woodward Avenue. Highland Park’s SWAT team was conducting a raid just before 7 p.m.

Before entering the house, the officer was shot in the leg from one of the windows by a suspect. Fellow officers transported him to a nearby hospital where he went into surgery. Police arrested the alleged shooter and a second person from inside the house.
