Georgia Governor Nathan Deal has signed legislation that legalizes medical marijuana in Georgia. While the new law is expected to bring relief to several Georgia families who had moved to states like Colorado where cannabis oil is legal, several hurdles remain. It remains illegal to grow marijuana in Georgia, so its currently unclear how these families would access medical marijuana.
House Bill 1 takes effect immediately and makes it legal for patients suffering from cancer, sickle cell disease and other illnesses to possess up to 20 ounces of cannabis oil if a physician approves. Other illnesses that qualified under the new law are Crohn’s disease, Lou Gehrig’s disease, mitochondrial disease, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease and seizure disorders.
