One young lady has inspired girls to love themselves and their hair with her award-winning comic book, BuzzFeed reports.

Troubled by her natural tresses and skin tone, 7-year-old Natalie McGriff and her mother Angie Nixon from Jacksonville, Fla., came up with the idea of the comic, The Adventures of Moxie GirlThe main character, Moxie Girl, uses a special shampoo that gives her magical powers to combat book-eating monsters.

With the help of the crowdfunding site One Spark, Moxie Girl was placed amongst over 500 other entries at their annual festival and received $16,424 towards a publication fund.

Nixon says she wanted her daughter to know she’s beautiful just the way she is, even if it doesn’t fit society’s norms.

“I decided to help Natalie write this book because she was having self-esteem issues regarding her hair and she hated to read,” Angie said in a statement. “She now realizes how powerful and awesome her hair is and that in order for her to write a cool book, she needs to read more books and learn different words.”

The comic is set to be released in June. You can learn more about the book and the adorable Natalie here.
