Kalief Browder’s story will make you outraged and so depressed at the same time. At age 16, when Browder was just a high school sophmore he was falsely accused of stealing a backpack and then incarcerated at Rikers Island for three years without trial.

As you can imagine, Rikers was hell pure hell and this young man was robbed of his child hood while the he “awaited” trial, until one day in 2013, the case was dropped and he was released.  Browder shared his story, met celebs like Jay Z and was featured on the news and in The New Yorker.

He was also still very troubled from his time in Rikers.  He spoke about being abused by guards and fellow inmates.  Some of his abuse was even caught on camera.

He went back to school and even college but sadly he couldn’t escape the scars from his past.  He attempted to take his life while in prison, then just a few months after leaving Rikers in 2013 and again on June 6th but this time it wasn’t an attempt.

Kalief Browder committed suicide June 6th, 2015.
