Lamar Davenport, the man accused of fatally stabbing actress E’Dena Hines, has pleaded not guilty, The Guardian reports.

Davenport was accused of killing Morgan Freeman‘s step-granddaughter in August after he was seen stabbing the actress 15 times while screaming religious chants on an NYC street. Police believe the 30-year-old was under the influence of cocaine.

Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance Jr. told reporters Davenport was charged with second-degree murder.

ABC News reports:

“West 162nd Street was the scene of a brutal and shocking act of violence in the early morning hours of August 16th,” Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance, Jr. said in a statement. “Beloved to her family and friends, E’Dena Hines had recently returned to New York City to pursue her acting career, but her life was tragically cut short before she could achieve her dreams.”

Court documents reveal Davenport repeatedly told the arresting officers at a Manhattan station house to “repent for their sins.” He also asked them why he was in police custody.

From the Guardian:

After he was arrested, Davenport was taken to a hospital where he was given sedatives, according to the court documents. He then awoke screaming: “Why did this happen? No, no! Why God?” the court papers say.

Davenport’s lawyer confirmed he is scheduled to undergo a psychiatric evaluation this Thursday.
