Drake has been making lots of noise on the music front this year, but on a personal level, he’s definitely been more low key with his words.

Just last month, Meek Mill took to Twitter to blast the Toronto rapper for allegedly using a ghostwriter on his recent album, If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late, and a huge beef ensued.

First, Drake released a diss track called “Charged Up,” and while that didn’t stop from reference tracks by Quentin Miller leaking to the web, he soon dropped a second song, “Back To Back,” that seemed to put the nail in the coffin.

Despite his arguable victory in the feud with Meek, some are still scratching their heads at the reference tracks, fueling the idea that Drake might really use a ghostwriter.

The MC sat down for an in-depth interview with FADER, where he finally addressed a ton of important topics that the hip-hop community has been itching to know.

Read some excerpts from Drake’s interview with FADER below.

On the reference tracks, and the conversation on ghostwriting that they sparked:

“I need, sometimes, individuals to spark an idea so that I can take off running. I don’t mind that. And those recordings—they are what they are. And you can use your own judgment on what they mean to you.”

“There’s not necessarily a context to them. And I don’t know if I’m really here to even clarify it for you.” He also later alluded to the larger conversation the controversy stirred up. “If I have to be the vessel for this conversation to be brought up—you know, God forbid we start talking about writing and references and who takes what from where—I’m OK with it being me.”

On Meek Mill sparking a beef and him claiming Drake has a ghostwriter:

“This is a discussion about music, and no one’s putting forth any music?… Nobody told you that this was a bad idea, to engage in this and not have something?…It was weighing heavy on me. I didn’t get it. I didn’t get how there was no strategy on the opposite end. I just didn’t understand. I didn’t understand it because that’s just not how we operate.”

On his famous co-signs:

“It’s just channeling my mom. Like, I’d bring home an essay that I did really well on, and my mom would read it through and give me notes back—on the essay that I just scored like 94 on! So sometimes I just do that. I’ll hear people’s stuff and… I’ll just give my interpretation of how I would have done it…It’s just, literally, I’ve recognized the potential and the greatness in this piece, and I want to take my stab at it too.”
