A&E networks is planning to revamp a classic series in the New Year. Variety reports that the company will premiere a remake of Roots, which is already in production in Louisiana.

As far as the cast makeup, the site announces that T.I. and Mekhi Phifer are a few of the actors already on board for the program. T.I. will assume the role of a slave named Cyrus who joins the Union Army to fight for freedom against the Confederates. Phifer’s character, deemed Jerusalem, also plays a slave who seems to have ulterior motives. So far, other names attached to the project include Forest Whitaker, Anika Noni Rose and Laurence Fishburne.

Roots will be dissected into four-parts that will air consecutively each night. Directors include Mario Van Peebles, Phillip Noyce, Thomas Carter and Bruce Beresford. Questlove will also hold the title of executive music producer for the mini-series.

There’s not exact air date, but the reboot of Roots will premiere on all A&E networks including Lifetime and History.
