FILE PHOTO: Actress Zoe Saldana To Play Nina Simone In Biopic Role

The upcoming Nina Simone biopic is receiving more hate than love these days.

Adding fuel to the controversial fire, Jeff Lieberman, who directed a documentary about Simone’s life called The Amazing Nina Simone, expressed his disdain for the film starring Zoe Saldana.

“[BET Founder] Robert Johnson’s defense of his film Nina was not only insulting, it was 100 percent wrong,” he wrote to the Hollywood Reporter, adding, “I am saddened by the ugly and inaccurate portrayal contained in the script and trailer of Nina and by Mr. Johnson’s desperate attempt to defend the project. Since Mr. Johnson is a black man who lived through the 1960s, I am surprised he does not know what Nina Simone stood for, both for herself and for the hundreds of thousands of people she inspired along the way.”

The film’s April 22 release is sure to cause a major stir.

72nd Annual Golden Globe Awards - Arrivals

Don Cheadle is known for his amazing acting chops and his knowledge on race and Hollywood.

The actor, who is set to play Miles Davis in the highly unconventional biopic Miles Ahead, chatted about the film and White Hollywood during a Q&A at the South by Southwest Film and Music Festival.

“I just thought that a movie about this person needed to be as mercurial and unexpected and improvisational as his music was. As opposed to a movie that’s, like, checking off all the boxes about Miles Davis’s life,” Cheadle stated.

When asked about the #OscarsSoWhite controversy, the Hotel Rwanda star said, “That’s a symptom of things that are not happening inside the halls of power where movies are being decided.”
