M.I.A is no stranger to controversy and this time, her words had consequences.
The Sri Lankan-born artist has officially been given the boot from headlining the Afropunk London festival after her comments towards the Black Lives Matter movement sparked an outrage. In an interview with Evening Standard, the alternative artist said, “It’s interesting that in America the problem you’re allowed to talk about is Black Lives Matter. It’s not a new thing to me — it’s what Lauryn Hill was saying in the 1990s, or Public Enemy in the 1980s. Is Beyoncé or Kendrick Lamar going to say Muslim Lives Matter? Or Syrian Lives Matter? Or this kid in Pakistan matters? That’s a more interesting question.”
The festival curators released a statement on Instagram this past Friday stating that the decision was “agreed upon by all involved” after both parties had a discussion.
Kim Kardashian shared a few behind-the-scenes pics from the video shoot. The entrepreneur shared a few flicks of her getting glam’d up, furthering dispelling rumors that her waist was photoshopped. Head on over to her Instagram for more photos.
Tatyana Ali is heading to court after filing a lawsuit against Warner Bros and Telepictures after claiming they stole her idea for The Real television show.
According to Love B. Scott, the lawsuit states: “Tatyana Ali says she came up with the concept for the show and eventually pitched to execs in 2012 but was told they “decided to decline.” The Real debuted about six months later as “a direct production” of the concept she hatched, according to the suit filed today in Los Angeles Superior Court (read it here). “With a great deal of disappointment and complete disbelief,” the suit says, Ali “witnessed [her] concept come to life on major network television at the hands of the Defendant Corporations.”
