Golden State Warriors guard Steph Curry is supporting Colin Kaepernick in his decision to kneel during the national anthem.
It began two weeks ago when the San Francisco 49ers quarterback took a stand before a preseason game, and while some people believe he’s simply disrespecting the flag, others are happy that it sparks the conversation about the unfair treatment of Africa-Americans and people of color in America.
During a recent interview with CNBC, Curry was asked how he feels about Kaepernick’s jersey selling out around the country.
“I love that there’s freedom of speech and he can stand up for what he believes in. There’s going to be people that disagree with him and there’s going to be people that agree with him, which is what I think our country stands for. Which hopefully will drive the conversation to bettering the equal rights and treatment of African-Americans and people of color. So I applaud him for taking a stand and hopefully the conversation is about what his message was and not ‘is he going to stand or is he going to sit for the national anthem’ or whoever it is. The conversation is started and should continue,” said Curry.
On the other hand, NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal doesn’t agree with the way Kaepernick is making his statement because it offends those in his family who have served in the military and are a part of law enforcement.
“I don’t know Colin, but again, to each his own. I don’t really have a say on it, but I would never do that. My father was a military man, and you know, he protected this country. Uncles are in law enforcement, you know, they go out and work hard every day … Just, (there are) other ways to get your point across,” Shaq said on Fox & Friends.
Like others, he criticized why Kaepernick decided to speak out now instead of last season, or even when he first entered the league. While the 28-year-old has yet to directly answer such criticism, plenty of other NFL players are sure to offer their opinion with the season kicking off Thursday night.
