We’re a week out from Nipsey Hussle’s Victory Lap. Set to be released on February 16, the album comes off the heels of last year’s No Pressure, a mixtape meant to set your palette for thunderous raps to come. And his recent collaboration is with Atlantic Records, where he’s taken his “All Money In imprint.” The two singles off the record have been a heavy, west-coast dose of financial positivism. “Rap Ni**as” is basically a credo of the one percent (own your masters, having a savings account) and “Last Time That I Checc’d” (feat. YG) is a red and blue themed ode to pulling yourself up by your bootstraps.
As it stands, the fans are in a fever for the new record and the tracklist doesn’t disappoint. “Young Nigga” features Diddy, but billed as Puff Daddy on the track. You can find Kendrick Lamar on “Dedication,” a west coast connection years in the making.
Victory Lap marks Hussle’s debut album and is part of a multi-album package with Atlantic Records. It marks an end to his seven-year independent run after leaving Epic Records in 2010. The years he spent building his brand saw him become financially independent with his brilliant “Proud2Pay” campaign for his mixtapes Crenshaw and Mailbox Money. Famously, Jay-Z bought 100 copies of Crenshaw at $100 bucks a piece, marking that the easiest 10 grand maybe anyone has ever made.
Now, with Atlantic, the All Money In president is ready to break out. “It’s not about a fame ambition or getting a radio record,” said Hussle. “The decision really came down to the message I’m trying to get across. I wanted to give that message the best chance to be heard and consumed on the highest level. That was my goal from the jump as All Money In took time to build its position in the hip-hop lane.”
And the release is meant to be “celebratory.” “If you was to get in your brand new Rolls-Royce, pull up to your brand new penthouse, and sit on the couch and think, and zone in to your story real quick,” Hussle said. “That’s what the album kind of sounds like and feels like to me.”
