Easter weekend is approaching which means lots of fun and family — and hopefully Easter egg hunts for the kids! I love decorating Easter eggs and adorning the brunch table with colorful eggs in addition to hiding plenty for the kids to collect.

Here’s a round-up of some of my favorite egg decorating strategies from some easy ideas that are perfect for tiny hands to handle to more ornate options to get your creative juices flowing and to compliment a gorgeous Easter brunch table. I love setting out simple little pots with grass or paperwhites with decorated eggs tucked in as an accent.

First, if you’re using the eggs for decor, empty the shells first so that you can use the egg white and yolk for recipes (no waste!). A great step-by-step on  how to empty eggs for decorating can be found at The Artful Crafter.

If you’re hiding eggs for kids to find, hard-boiling them is the best bet (tip: refrigerate cooked eggs for at least an hour before decorating), so you don’t end up with tears over broken eggs.

Sticker Silhouettes Easter Eggs:

Before dunking eggs in a food coloring and water (or vinegar, for brighter colors) bath, have kids place stickers on the shells (I like using simple shapes like circles, for a polka-dot effect, or flowers for a festive effect). Dunk the eggs in the colored water bath until desired depth is achieved. Remove from the bath and let dry for about 15 – 20 minutes. Remove stickers when the eggs are fully dry.

Rubber Band Easter Eggs:

This is one of my favorite methods of decorating eggs — which can be simple for kids or you can get really fancy by dunking the eggs repeatedly to create a cool, striped effect. First, wrap rubber bands around the egg (gently!) before dunking. I like wrapping a couple of bands around the eggs to create a layered, artful effect. Similar to the sticker process, remove the bands after the eggs have dried.

Magic Crayon Designed Easter Eggs:

Before dunking in the color bath, draw on the eggs with a white crayon. The crayon wax creates a barrier on the egg shell so that dye doesn’t stain the shell under the drawn designs. When the egg emerges, your artwork is showcased against the colors.
