The Roots have used their spot on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon to expand their musical horizons.

The band has played with dozens of acts that they normally wouldn’t be able to such as last night’s musical guest, folk singer Suzanne Vega, who had a big hit in 1990 with a remix of her song “Tom’s Diner.”

The original version of “Tom’s Diner” was an acapella track from her 1987 album and was revived three years later by dance music producers DNA.

Here, The Roots and Vega tackle the infectious tune in one of the most head-scratching moments in television history.

But I love it.

And don’t act like you didn’t like this song back in 1990… if any of you were even alive back then………..

Interesting tidbit from Wikipedia:

Suzanne Vega’s song “Tom’s Diner” was used as the reference track in an early trial of the MP3 compression system, earning her the distinction of being the Mother of the MP3. It was chosen because her a capella vocal with relatively little reverberation was used as the model for Karlheinz Brandenburg’s compression algorithm.
