COLUMBUS, Ind. (The Republic/WISH) – A semi driver who crashed into a pile of logs off Interstate 65 in southern Bartholomew County was killed in the accident, state police said.

The driver, 58-year-old Terry L. Ingle, of Greentown, was northbound on I-65 just after 10:30 p.m. when he lost control of the truck for an unknown reason, entered the median, crossed over the southbound lanes and continued off the road into a wooded area where the truck crashed into a large pile of brush, according to ISP.

The conditions of the road at the time of the crash were snow-covered and extremely slick.

Police said citizens gave aid to Ingle until medics arrived at the scene.

Police said drugs and alcohol are not believed to be a factor in the crash and Ingle was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. The coroner’s office said an autopsy is scheduled for Friday to rule out any medical issues that may have led up to the crash.

The conditions of I-65, US 31 and US 50 have seen significant improvements since Thursday morning. They are now mostly wet with slush in areas, ISP reports.

Depending on the temperature, and how much salt is on the road, the wet pavement can unknowingly turn into icy pavement.

If the road is anything other than dry reduced speeds are warranted.
