For many fans of Little Brother, “Hiding Place” was one of the shining moments of their critically acclaimed sophomore LP, The Minstrel Show. You had Phonte and Big Pooh teaming up with a  lyrical juggernaut like Slum Village’s Elzhi making it one of the most anticipated team-ups since Marvel Vs. Capcom.

Elzhi’s battle-tested, double-time flow going back and forth with  Phonte’s seasoned wit was indeed one for the history books. While it wasn’t a competition  per se, the internet debates raged as to who took who on the track.

“It was like iron sharpening iron,” Phonte recalls. “It was one MC making the other one better. It was one of my favorite moments of all the albums.”

Most fans will remember Pooh whispering “Dilla” at the beginning of the track, leading some to think that he had produced it. Rather, the late MC/Producer was supposed to appear on the 9th Wonder produced song but things didn’t work out as planned.

In the clip below Te takes another look back (shout out to Seandammit!) about one of the hottest records he’s ever made and what it means to do a collab live in the studio verse passing tracks over the internet.
