The Decatur Township School Board agreed this evening to slash $5.6 million from its budget but hasn’t finalized specific areas to cut.

The biggest share of the proposed cuts — $3 million — would come from teachers’ compensation. Possible trims could come from pay cuts, early retirements, staff reductions and increases in teachers’ out-of-pocket payments for benefits.

The school district also plans to cut $1.2 million in transportation expenses, but has not outlined how to reach that total.

The School Board already has decided to cut administrators’ pay by a total of $191,205. Superintendent Don Stinson will receive a 15 percent pay cut from his current salary of $189,000.

The School Board hasn’t set a date for making a final decision on the budget cuts but directed administrators to begin Friday to look for specific areas to trim.

Like school districts throughout Indiana, Decatur Township is facing painful budget cuts because of property tax caps and shortfalls in state revenue.

Franklin Township on Wednesday decided to cut nearly $7 million from its budget by closing two schools, laying off more than 50 teachers and implementing pay-for-play athletics and transportation fees.
