Indianapolis – He’s not the biggest guy on the field, but safety BobSanders may be the biggest playmaker on the Colts’ defense.

Sanders has missed the first five games of the season, but he’s expected to strap on the helmet when Colts visit the Rams this Sunday.

Bob Sanders’ knack for making big plays in big games has made him one of the most feared players in the NFL. After missing the first five games with an injured knee, number 21 is back at practice and could make a return this Sunday.

“As we say he’s been ramping up his activity over the last three weeks and we fully anticipate as things go forward this week that we anticipate he may be able to do something for us,” said Coach Jim Caldwell.

“I haven’t been out there since last year so it’s exciting to be back on the field and back with my teammates,” Sanders said.

When Sanders is on the field, he makes the most of it.

“Bob brings a lot of energy, obviously a guy who plays his position at a high level and anytime you have him on the field we’re a better team,” said Gary Brackett, linebacker.

“To see the 21 running back there, it’s definitely going to be a comfortable feeling,” said Dwight Freeney, defensive end.

Sanders last saw game action in January’s wild card game against the Chargers. He was asked what the biggest adjustment will be after a long layoff.

“Just getting my feet underneath me. I haven’t been out there in a long time. I’m so used to running around and making a lot of plays. I just have to make sure where I need to be, get my fits, my reads, communication, I mean everything. It takes a lot to be back there and play safety so I gotta make sure I’m ready,” he said.

Sanders will need to be ready because the Rams have one of the NFL’s best running backs, Steven Jackson.

“He’s very shifty, very quick, quick feet, strong, powerful. He can run you over, run around you, make you miss all those great things, so if I’m playing it will definitely be a great week,” said Sanders.

Currently the Colts have the seventh best defense in the NFL, giving up an average of 295 yards per game. A healthy Bob Sanders would be a nice upgrade to an already good defense.
