1. Slob

If you want to be a slob, you can. There is nobody to complain about your lack of domestic skills or that you haven’t washed the saucepans that they want to use. The downside is that you have no-one to blame but yourself if the place is a mess.

2. Decor

You don’t have to live with someone else’s tastes and can decorate the house as you want. Whatever you want, you can buy. If you want, you can paint the walls purple and no-one will tell you it looks hideous.

3. Silence is golden

You won’t get disturbed by housemates or snoring partners. No need to listen to other people’s music tastes, TV programmes or slamming doors. No loud disagreements, no answering the phone for someone else. Bliss!

4. Privacy

You can walk around dressed however you want, naked if you choose. Nor will you be disturbed by flatmates if you are having a romantic evening in.

5. Peace Rules

You are blissfully free from arguments. No-one will moan at you about anything. There will be no arguments about who does the washing up or buys the toilet rolls…  it’s just you.

If, in contrast to point 1, you’re the kind of person who likes things just so, then living alone means that you don’t have to worry about others meeting your standards of cleanliness and tidiness. Nobody is going to borrow your things, or use your milk (the cause of many a flatsharing argument).

7. Menagerie

If you’re cat-mad like me, you can have as many as you want (or as space allows). You can have a dog, a snake, a tarantula, a parrot, a ferret or whatever you like. No allergic partners or animal-hating flatmates can object.

8. Me, me, me!

Your time and your life is your own. You don’t have to look after anyone else or answer to them. However you want to spend your time is entirely up to you, and is a freedom that many people envy.

9. Bathrooms

No sharing! For anyone who grew up in a family with everyone sharing one bathroom, having one to yourself is absolute bliss. You can take as long as you like to bathe or do your makeup, and you do not have to pick up anyone else’s dirty towels or clean the bath before you can use it.

You can do what you like, when you like. If you want to sleep all day and be up all night, then fine. That’s exactly what you can do! If you want to spend all day watching DVDs, no-one will nag you to go out, do something else, clean the kitchen.

There are good and bad points about living alone, in a couple or in a family. I hope I’ve shown you here that living on your own can be great though. So if you find yourself in that situation, don’t be scared, treat it as an advantage! Or do you already live alone and love it? Please tell me why!
